WELCOME!

If you are viewing this for the first time, welcome to Orchard View, and we hope you are as excited about Food Storage and Emergency preparedness as we are. To use this blog, use the labels section below to search by topics (and there are multiple pages for many of them, so make sure you click "older posts" at the bottom of each page). And you see to the right above the "Labels" section is a list of links to websites that you might find to be useful. Also, we welcome you to become a "follower" of our ward's blog. Any way you use this site, we appreciate you paying us a visit and hope we have something to share with you that will benefit you and your loved ones.
May God bless us in our efforts as we "prepare every needful thing".

June "Sensible Food Storage Solutions"

A big thank you to everyone who were able to make it to our Spring Kick-off event in April for self reliance! We had a great time and watched Wendy Dewitt's video: "Sensible Food Storage". In the video she discussed how to survive a worst case scenario: no electricity, no running water, no stores, and no help on the way; and still be able to thrive and have your family continue to eat the foods that you love.

This year we plan on breaking down what was discussed in the video and have classes where we demonstrate
  • Using different methods of being prepared (discover which method will be the best for you) and getting your food storage in order and actually USING IT!
  • How to vacuum seal using mason jars and a food saver to extend the shelf life of food that cannot be put into # 10 cans
  • Emergency methods of cooking
  • Bottle fruits using a water bath method
  • Bottle meats using a pressure cooker
This month we will cover a few of those topics and more that were featured in Sister Dewitts presentation. Many sisters could not attend that event so we are just going to show you ourselves. Come, June 27th at 6:30 to Lauren's house for some good information and light refreshments.

Also, for those who are interested, there will be a a sign up clip board that will circulate in Relief Society for the Wendy Dewitt's DVD and the book "I Dare You to Eat It" by Leisa Card. The movie and book are not endorsed by the church directly, but are products sold at Deseret book and contain information that might just get you interested in food storage. There are many different ways of getting prepared, our hope is that one of these might just work for you.

Any questions, please ask or contact Jenny or Lauren. Thanks! And everyone have a fabulous summer!
